Understanding Common Lumber Sizes

Lumber sizes can be a little confusing at first. A board labeled 2x4 does not actually measure 2 inches by 4 inches after it has been dried and finished.

Common Lumber Sizes

• 2x4 — commonly used for wall framing and general projects
• 2x6 — often used for framing, decks, and heavier-duty projects
• 2x8, 2x10, and 2x12 — commonly used for joists, headers, and larger structural projects
• 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8 — often used for trim, shelving, and smaller projects

Nominal vs. Actual Size

The size printed on the board is called the nominal size. The actual finished dimensions are slightly smaller.

For example:

• A 2x4 actually measures about 1½" x 3½"
• A 2x6 actually measures about 1½" x 5½"
• A 1x6 actually measures about ¾" x 5½"
