How To Fix A Light Bulb

1. Check the fixture for the required bulb type, base size, shape, and maximum wattage. Take a photo of the old bulb and fixture label.
2. Go to a hardware, home-improvement, or general retail store.
3. Choose a replacement bulb that matches the base and shape. Do not exceed the fixture’s maximum wattage. For LEDs, match the desired brightness in lumens and pick a color temperature, such as warm white (2700K).
4. Buy the bulb and bring it home carefully.
5. Turn off the light switch. If the fixture is damaged or you are unsure which switch controls it, turn off the circuit breaker as well.
6. Let the old bulb cool completely. Use a sturdy step ladder if needed—never stand on furniture.
7. With dry hands, gently turn the old bulb counterclockwise until it comes free. For unusual fixtures, follow the fixture’s removal instructions.
8. Check the empty socket for damage, scorching, or loose parts. If you see any, stop and contact an electrician.
9. Insert the new bulb and turn it clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten it.
10. Step down safely, move the ladder aside, and restore the circuit breaker if you turned it off.
11. Turn on the light switch and confirm the bulb works.
12. Recycle or dispose of the old bulb according to local rules—especially if it is a CFL or fluorescent bulb containing mercury.
